Where the real differences are

If you have already met a Thai herbal inhaler — the small twist-open stick many people in Thailand keep in a pocket or bag — the harder part is knowing which one to buy. Several traditional Thai brands make them, and they reach Europe through very different routes. That is where the real differences are: not in the shape of the stick, but in where it came from and who stands behind it. This is a short guide to what is actually worth checking. What to look for on the label

On a Hong Thai label you will find a few recognisable aromatics — menthol, camphor and borneol — combined with traditional herbs and essential oils. Other brands blend differently, which is exactly why the ingredient list is worth reading rather than assuming.

Two things are worth checking before you buy:

• A full ingredient list. If a seller cannot show you what is in it, that is a reason to pause.
• The language of the label. A product prepared for the EU market carries its ingredient information and safety notes in a language the buyer can actually read.

And one thing to be clear about: these are aromatherapy products for everyday refreshment. They are not medicines and not medical devices, and no seller should present them as if they were.

How to tell you are buying an original

Three checks tell you most of what you need to know:

1. How close is the seller to the manufacturer? An official partner or distributor buys from the Thai manufacturer directly. A reseller of a reseller usually cannot tell you where a given batch came from.
2. Is there an identifiable EU business behind the product? In the EU, a product placed on the market must have an economic operator established in the EU, with a full postal address and an email address shown on the product, its packaging or an accompanying document. If you cannot find one, nobody is carrying responsibility for that product.
3. Is the labelling prepared for the EU market, or is it a Thai-market pack with nothing added?

Where the goods ship from matters

One practical point that is easy to miss: it makes a difference whether the stock is already inside the EU or is being sent to you from Thailand.

If the goods are already in free circulation inside the EU, an order to another EU country is an ordinary intra-EU delivery — no customs clearance and no import handling on your side. If the parcel comes from outside the EU, customs is your problem, and the delivery time is a different story.
